In 1950-1954 he served in the Baltic Navy, graduated from the correspondence department of the Kazan Pedagogical Institute, finished the post-graduate course of the Kazan State University, defended the Ph.D. thesis on philology.

  M. Magdeyev came to literature as a literature critic and specialist in study of literature. He was interested in the history of the development of the Tatar literature, problems of scientific study of folklore, and many his critical and journalist articles were published in periodicals.
