  Konstantin Vasiliev

Konstantin Alekseyevich Vasiliev was born on September 3, 1942 in Maikop. The Childhood, youth and mature years he spent near Kazan in a small settlement Vasilievo. When Kostya was 11, he entered the Surikov's Moscow secondary boarding school, and later he graduated from the Kazan Art school.

Konstantin Vasiliev experimented with a great variety of styles and trends of painting - from classic, icon painting and Russian cheap popular print to modern avant-garde art. The long-term searches resulted in appearance of a special, unique style in which a number of schools and trends merged together. Contemplation and thoughtfulness of our far ancestors and dynamical, cinema perception of the world of a modern men were united in his canvases. Each Vasiliyev's picture has several meaningful layers: simple, everyday layer, the layer of historical parallels and associations, the layer of symbols of Slavonic pre-Christian culture, and others, deeper layers, which are difficult to define in words: Constantin Vasiliyev created all his serious works, listening each time to a certain piece of music, so they become some kind of synthesis of colour and sound.

The officials of Artists' Union had been rejecting Vasiliyev's art for a long time. With a certain difficulty he managed to achieve a sanction to carry out the exhibition, which at once became a sensation and brought him fame.Kostya died under the strange and mysterious circumstances. Official version states that he and his friend were killed by a passing train on a railway crossing. It happened on October 29, 1976. His relatives and friends don't accept this version - there are too many strange coincidences, connected with his death. This accident has shocked many people.

After his death his paintings were still being persecuted. Even in 1985, before Perestroika, certain 'art workers' insisted on : destroying his canvases, prohibiting their restoration. The enthusiasts from Kolomna, where Vasiliyev's mother had moved by that time, managed to save his works. Now they are kept in Moscow, and as for the names of persecutors, nobody remembers them.. They say his canvases have some extrasensory properties, and that the artist managed to penetrate intuitively into the secret of ancient Slavonic schools of the spiritual self-perfection, which were capable to give people what is called Russian Spirit and Powerful Force.
