Alexander Popov
Popov Alexander Fedorovich - a wellknown mathematician was born in 1815. He graduated from the Kazan university from physical and mathematical faculty. The follower of Lobachevsky, Popov became his successor in 1846 on the faculty of pure mathematics. A.F.Popov's scientific activity was devoted mainly, to the hydrodynamics, theory of waves, theory of elasticity, theory of sound. In 1845 Popov was authorized in the degree of the doctor of mathematics and mechanics. Being engaged with special love in mathematical physics, Popov left at the same time the most valuable works in pure mathematics, one of them "the Bases of calculus of variations" (1855). A.F.Popov's works brought to him deserved respect and authority in the scientific world. In 1866 he was elected the member-correspondent of Russian Academy of Science and the honorary member of the Kazan university. Years of life: (17/11/1815 - 31/12/1878) |
