Schapov Afanasiy 01/01/1831
Afanasy Prokofevich Shapov was a Russian historian. A. Shapov was born in Anga settlement of Irkutsk Province in 1831. His family was big. He attended a seminary at public cost. Later, he studied at a theological seminary. In 1852, he came to Kazan to continue his education at a spiritual academy. He graduated from the academy in 1856. His Master Degree dissertation was devoted to the history of Russian schism and Old-Belief. In September of 1860, he accepted an offer to take a professorial chair at the Kazan University. In 1860, Shapov was arrested and deported from Kazan to Petersburg for antiauthority speeches on Kurtinskaya funeral in Arsk cemetery's church. The funeral was held in commemoration of Bezdenskoye Revolt participants who had been shot down. One year later, he began his journalistic activity. Also, he wrote "The Social and Pedagogical Conditions of Russian People Development", in which he tried to give the materialistic interpretation of the history. In 1864, he was expelled to his native Anga village and then to Irkutsk. The Siberian period, which lasted for twelve years, was the most difficult one in his life. He continued his journalistic activity. Moreover, he took part in Tarukhanskaya expedition. His physical condition was getting worse with years. He became lame and almost fully blind. On February 27th of 1876, he died of a decline in poverty. |
