Tatar Puppet Theatre `Ekiyat`
History The theatre was founded in 1934 as the international puppet theatre. Merzliakov Sergei Makarovich was the founder of the theatre. The first actors: Mariam Hisamova, Vali Gafarov, Boris Rychkov and others. The plays were performed in two languages: Russian and Tatar. For a long time the theatre was called 'Kazan State Puppet Theatre'. In 1999 it was renamed in Tatar State Puppet Theatre 'Ekiyat'. Since 1974 the theatre has become the collective member of UNIMA (International Union of Puppet Theatre Workers) The hall can seat 246 people. Since 1954 the theatre is situated in building of the church 'of Descent of Holy Spirit' in Sukonnaya Sloboda. Tours The theatre took part in festivals and congresses UNIMA in Moscow, Washington, Sophia, Berlin, Belgrade, Ismir, Adan, Ryazan, St. Petersburg, Brunswick, in International festival of Puppet theatres in Cannes with the performances 'I cast a line' and 'Gees-swans'.
