Nikolay Zinin
Nikolay Nikolaevich Zinin was born in Shusha on August 3, 1812. He studied in the Saratov grammar school. In 1830 he entered the Kazan university. After the graduation Zinin was sent on business abroad where he mastered sciences in laboratories of well-known scientists - Libich and Faradei. Since 1837 he worked in laboratories and factories in Germany, France, England. Since 1839-1840 he worked in the Gisen university at Y.Libich. In 1848-1874 - he worked at Saint-Petersburg medical-surgical academy. Becoming in 1841 the professor of the Kazan university, N.Zinin successfully promoted formation of the whole group of Russian chemists, including great A.M.Butlerov. From 1848 to 1874 as a professor of the Petersburg medical-surgical academy, Zinin so highly lifted a level of chemical-pedagogical and chemical-research works in it, that local funnymen offered to rename medical-surgical in medical-chemical academy. N.Zinin's researches resulted in very significant discoveries. Among them is way of reception of aniline - basis of many dyes and medicines. Historian of science N.A.Belogolovy wrote about him: "there was not... a subject where he would not be at home: chemistry, mineralogy, botany, geology, astronomy, physiology... and passion and shine of speech and amazing memory" Together with L.L.Voskresensk he is the founder of the big school of Russian chemists. Among his disciples were L.M.Butlerov, N.N.Beketov, A.P.Borodin etc. In 1868 in St. Petersburg the Russian chemical society was founded, and N.Zinin was elected its chairman. In 1880 this society founded the premium named after N.N.Zinin and A.A.Voskresensky. February, 6, 1880 N.Zinin died of kidney attack. |
