Katanov Nikolay 05/06/1862
Nikolay Fedorovich Katanov The outstanding orientalist and traveller N.Katanov was born on May, 6, 1862 in steppe area Izyum (Uzyum) which is 17 kms from Askiz village, on the left bank of Abakan - confluent of the Yenisei river. In 1869-1876 Katanov studied at Askiz school, and in 1876 he entered the grammar school in Krasnoyarsk. In 1884-1888 he was a student of the east faculty of the Petersburg University. From 1888 to 1892 Katanov participated in scientific expedition of the Academy of sciences and visited Siberia, Mongolia, Chinese and Turkestan where he studied customs, life, language, and folklore of the Turkic peoples. At the end of 1893 he passed examinations for the degree of master of Turkish and Tatar literature and then he was appointed professor extraordinary of the department of Turkish and Tatar dialects at the Kazan University. In 1911 N.F.Katanov started to teach the Tatar language at the Kazan theological academy. After revolution of 1917 N.F.Katanov worked at the Kazan University. From the very beginning of the scientific career N.F.Katanov was recognized as the best orientalist. He was a full member of the Society of archeology, history and ethnography of the Kazan university for 28 years (1894-1922); 16 years of this period he was its chairman (1898-1914), 2 years - a secretary (1896-1898) and the editor of "Izvestiya" newspaper of this Society. N.F.Katanov was the author of the works on bibliographic review of the East, which were issued abroad and in Russia. He read dozens of reports at the meetings of the Society and 130 articles were published in 'Izvestiya' newspaper. They were devoted to questions on ethnography of the Turkic tribes, literature, numismatics and Islam. He also scrutinized the history of the area: ancient Bulgaria, Kazan empire and city of Kazan. He studied Muslim coins from Bulgar and Golden Horde items of material culture found during the archeological excavations. N.F.Katanov conducted active public work. He participated in activity of scientific organizations, museums and libraries; he gave lectures, translated and was engaged publishing, and performed public commissions. N.F.Katanov died on March, 10, 1922 in Kazan. |
