  Maksudi Sadri
  01/01/1878

Sadri Maksudi (Satretdin Nizametdinovich Maksudov) is an outstanding public figure and statesman, recognized scientist, one of the prominent persons of our time.

Sadri Maksudi was born in 1878 in Tashsu village of the Kazan region (nowadays Vysokogorsky region) in mullah's family. S.Maksudi received elementary education from his father, then at Kazan "Gallyamiya" madrasah. Here he studied the Turkish, Arabian, Persian languages and Muslim philosophy for eight years. After the madrasah he entered the Kazan school.

In 1901, due to I.Gasprinsky's help, S.Maksudi left for France. Being persistent, clever and industrious Maksudi managed to overcome difficulties and mastered French within a year, and then he entered the Paris University to study law. On graduating the University he returned to Kazan in 1906. This year was the beginning of his national activity.

Being the deputy of the II and III Dumas S.Maksudi served the interests of the Turkic peoples of Russia in 1906-1912. At the same time he was one of the recognized leaders and ideologists of the Tatar national movement. The congress of the Turkic peoples of Russia was opened in July of 1917 and it was decided to establish national and cultural autonomy of the Volga-Ural Turkis. Ufa was chosen as a capital and S.Mascudi was selected the head. Already on April 25, 1918 the autonomy ceased to exist.

Being sentenced to the death penalty, S.Maksudi was compelled to run from country. First he went to Finland, then to France. In 1923 he started to give lectures on the history of Turkic peoples at Sorbonna University. When he moved from Paris to Turkey, S.Maksudi aimed to study history of Turkic peoples and establish the Academy for popularization of this knowledge and researche.

In 1950 S.Maksudi gave up politics and devoted himself to science. One of his last works, "Sociological principles of patriotic spirit", is still one of the thorough researches on the theory of nations and national relations.

S.Maksudi died in 1957, in Istanbul.
