Emblem of Kazan, XVII century
The Kazan arms has an ancient origin. The legend tells about the foundation of the city: Kazan was built on the place where there was a set of snakes. The tatar sorcerer lit fires and created spells. Snakes died, and their king Zilant flied to the mountain in vicinities named Dzhilantau (Snake mountain). On the exempted place people constructed city. However they couldn't live quietly , as lodged nearby the snake king induced horror on them. Fortunately, in the city there was powerful wizard Hakim, which managed to kill the snake king with artful sorcery. In memory of this event the image of Zilant got in the city emblem.
Emblem of the Kazan province
At drawing up in XVIII century of the Kazan arms which kept on the board the old image of the snake, it received a new description: "Snake black, under Kazan gold crown, wings red, field white". But in other documents this snake, may be, only related to it monster, began to be named a dragon. In XIX century in anew drawn arms of former Kazan province, ancient snake king Zilant (after called Vasilisk) was also named a dragon

The State Emblem of Tatarstan Republic represents the image of a winged snow leopard with a round shield on one side, with the raised right forepaw on the background of sun disk placed in the frame of the tatar national ornament in the basis of which there is inscription "Tatarstan", wings consist of seven feathers, the rosette on the shield consists of eight petals.
